Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to us that you take the time to write to us and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful to us and help support us through very challenging times. To you we are forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically stop writing on September 9, 2010. However, at the moment, I feel like our journey with grief still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with us, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki and Peter

Tonight's picture was taken in August of 2008. That weekend, Mattie's cousins from Boston came down to visit with him. Thankfully we had the best nurses, who understood that Mattie would do better interacting with his cousins outside the unit. So we went outside in the Hospital's courtyard. That courtyard was our escape on a good weather day. Outside the medical library was this rock garden. Mattie loved looking at the rocks and was showing them to his cousins. I have to admit on one "bad" day in the Hospital, we went down to this garden and took a big rock. This rock still sits by our front door at home.

Quote of the day: Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh

We were in the car today from 9:20am to 6pm. It was a long day for all of us, Indie and Sunny included. However, it was a very light traffic day. We literally got out of DC in no time at all. Even getting on the GW Bridge in NYC was a breeze. So clearly we picked a good travel day! I love seeing the NY sky line and every time I approach this part of NY, I text message my lifetime friend, Karen, who lives there.

Because of the 9 hour trip, I decided to drive for close to four hours (DC to through NJ). I figured it would help Peter, but it would also help me, as sitting as a passenger for a long time is hard.

The George Washington Bridge. Yes there was some traffic, but it was moving freely!
Indie handled the car drive beautifully! She is easy going. Sunny on the other hand was very anxious. He even refused treats. Nonetheless, he enjoyed getting out of the car at rest stops and walking and sniffing. He got three walks while on the road. However, when we pulled into Massachusetts, he seemed to have the sense that he was going to get out of the car soon.

We celebrated my birthday tonight with Peter's parents. So I can officially say, my birthday wasn't just a day this year, it was a week and then some (if you count my trip to Philadelphia).
