Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to us that you take the time to write to us and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful to us and help support us through very challenging times. To you we are forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically stop writing on September 9, 2010. However, at the moment, I feel like our journey with grief still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with us, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki and Peter

Tonight's picture was taken in August of 2008. That day the coach of the school's football team, Dave, came to visit us at home. He presented Mattie with a signed team ball and a photograph of the team. Keep in mind that we had never met Dave before that day. It was that first encounter that led to a wonderful friendship over the years.

Quote of the day: Today's coronavirus update from Johns Hopkins.

  • Number of people diagnosed with the virus: 36,663,707
  • Number of people who died from the virus: 621,595

We spent several hours at the house today. This week is another big push.... with the electrician, hvac person, stairs being sealed, and closet systems being installed in several rooms.

When we bought the house this was the cabinetry in the laundry room. It may look fine in the photo but I assure you it is big and clunky. The laundry/mud room is small given the size of the house. It now makes sense, as the neighbor told us that this space was once part of the garage. The former owners made the garage smaller to have a pantry and mud room. I get it, but it does explain why the garage is small as is the mud/laundry room. Having big furniture pieces in the room only makes it smaller.

I would have lived with the big pieces of furniture! But given the electrician had to cut away half of the furniture to access the electrical panels, this made me think. Not to mention the the electrician said that the furniture in front of a panel was against code. Today we made the decision to break apart the other piece of furniture. I rather have the painter plaster the whole wall and paint it a uniform color. Otherwise, behind this furniture piece will be a green wall, and the rest of the wall will eventually be painted Medici ivory.

Of course breaking down this furniture means it needs to be replaced with a different organizing system. This afternoon, I looked at photos Peter took of the house when we bought it! I am glad he took extensive photos, because it helps me see just how much we transformed the house in a short period of time.
