A Remembrance Video of Mattie

Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to me that you take the time to write and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful and help support me through very challenging times. I am forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically have stopped writing on September 9, 2010. However, like my journey with grief there is so much that still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with me, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki

Tonight's picture was taken on November 14, 2008. The day of Mattie's second major surgery. This second surgery was over 12 hours long. Mattie had bones removed and prosthetic ones replaced in his left arm and wrist, and right leg. By that surgery, his pain management was more effectively provided because we made it clear that we did not want a repeat performance of the first surgery. Basically the hospital team did not listen to Mattie's surgeon or us and held back the necessary amount of pain meds needed. I remember that first surgery, being up at 3am fighting with the team because Mattie was in horrendous pain.

Quote of the day: Today's coronavirus update from Johns Hopkins

  • Number of people diagnosed with the virus: 47,660,375
  • Number of people who died from the virus: 770,691

It is November, and I finally sent out an e-announcement about our move! The only reason I got it going is because I am receiving messages from people asking for our new address. Being holiday card season, I certainly don't want cards to be sent to our old address and friends wasting postage on us.

To say I feel scattered is an understatement! It was a busy day here. I did more chores and I am not sure where I will get the energy and strength to go through closets and things to either donate or pack. I am not sure if this would have been any easier if I hadn't just gone through this for Peter and me this summer. What I do know is I feel like I have been dealing with large tasks one after the other. How I packed our DC home after 27 years there still floors me, but if I could do that, I most certainly can handle this in California. Or at least this is my mantra for today!
