A Remembrance Video of Mattie

Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to me that you take the time to write and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful and help support me through very challenging times. I am forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically have stopped writing on September 9, 2010. However, like my journey with grief there is so much that still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with me, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki

Tonight's picture was taken in December of 2003. This was another photo experience!!! Mattie was a year and a half old and a bundle of energy! Certainly not one to stand still for a photo in front of our Christmas tree at home! So we had to have a strategy to capture a photo for our Christmas card! I dressed him in his Christmas sweater and we took him to Lowe's and Home Depot that day! Two stores Mattie tolerated! Mainly because they were big, open, and people were not on top of him. I figured there would be Christmas lights and displays there and I could capture him in motion there. I am sure we were a sight that day and others had no idea what on earth we were doing. We took lots of photos of Mattie at both stores and this was the one we selected!

Quote of the day: To do more for the world than the world does for you, that is success. ~ Henry Ford

This morning we arose to this glorious sight…. a sunrise over the Caribbean Sea, which is a beautiful deep blue.

In the distant we could also see Cuba, about twenty miles away. We were traveling alongside Cuba for most of the morning.

We started the morning by attending a zumba class. Peter was really looking forward to joining the class with my mom and me but unfortunately he hurt his back and is out of commission for doing any sort of exercising. Nonetheless, he came with us and has become an excellent assessor of zumba class instructors!!

After zumba, we attended a fruit and vegetable carving. We learned that this art form originated in  South East Asia, primarily in Thailand and the Philippines. In fact, in these Countries children learn how to do this from their parents, but NOT using fruits and vegetables, but using wood, since woods are readily available.

It was amazing to watch these men artistically create these sculptures right before our eyes! Literally within minutes and with such detail and expressions!

This was Gary. He was one of the artisans and truly gifted! He designed a bird cage right in front of us, using fruits, vegetables, and wooden skewers!

A beautiful cockatiel!

How do you like this cat and mouse?! New uses for a pineapple, zucchini and oranges!!!

The ship's atrium is all decked out for Christmas! Since we are at sea today and the connectivity is ABSOLUTELY horrible, I am signing off for today. But I wanted to give you a feeling for our day.
