A Remembrance Video of Mattie

Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to me that you take the time to write and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful and help support me through very challenging times. I am forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically have stopped writing on September 9, 2010. However, like my journey with grief there is so much that still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with me, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki

Tonight's picture was taken in October of 2008. Mattie was admitted to the hospital that day! How do I know? Because Mattie was wearing clothes. Whenever Mattie was in the hospital, he only wanted to wear pajamas. However, between hospital admissions, Mattie would wear clothes. Therefore, I can always tell admission days by the photos! The child life playroom at the hospital was having pumpkin decorating that day and of course Mattie was eager to join in as Mattie was all about the pumpkins!

Quote of the day: Ambiguous loss is the most stressful loss people can face. ~ Pauline Boss

Given that today is a holiday, I had the luxury of getting up at 8am. This is literally unheard of for me, as most days I am up between 6 and 6:30am. Some days earlier. It was a pleasure not rushing around and meeting a time clock! Even Indie seemed to understand not to wake me up, which was appreciated.

After I got my dad showered, dressed, had breakfast, and then settled in his recliner, I started to do chores. I reprogrammed outdoor light timers, I picked up fallen limbs in the backyard, naturally did a ton of laundry, and even tackled cleaning the inside glass of my oven door. I have been trying to clean this glass on the door for weeks. Nothing seemed to work! I finally read an article by Martha Stewart, who recommended making a paste out of baking soda and water, spreading it all over the glass and letting it sit for 15 minutes. I decided to try it and she is absolutely correct. It cleans the glass without damaging it! So next I am going to try her steam cleaning method for cleaning my oven. Not sure when I will tackle that, but it is on my list.

This afternoon, I took my parents out to Dairy Queen. It was a beautiful weather day, and it helps to have outings. This chocolate extreme blizzard was the highlight of my day. While we were having our blizzards, I pulled out the game of Quirkle. It is a color and shape game with tiles and it gets both of my parents to think, looks for patterns and converse. Conversing is vital, because if I left my dad to his own devices he would say NOTHING all day long, and my mom would be glued to her phone. So games help draw them both out. They both had a lovely day out and I celebrate these small wins.
