Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to us that you take the time to write to us and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful to us and help support us through very challenging times. To you we are forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically stop writing on September 9, 2010. However, at the moment, I feel like our journey with grief still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with us, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki and Peter

Friday, August 1st, 2008 - Bad news: Mattie's cancer has matastisized to his other humerus, as proven by the CT scan and bone scan taken today. Mattie's condition is now considered a Metastatic Synchronous Osteosarcoma, meaning that it has appeared in both upper humeri. The CT Scan of the lungs proved there is no spread to the lungs, which is a good thing, but the cancer now appearing in both arms will mean surgery on both arms and perhaps extended chemotherapy, as well as a decreased survival rate. Mattie will still begin chemo on Tuesday and will likely be admitted on Monday to get his central line put into his chest. We'll do addtional xrays of the bones on Monday just to be sure.

I'll share more when I can but we're just trying to comprehend what this all means, so please pray for us.

Hi there Vicki & Pete,

It's Mercedes from the 2007 GWU Cohort and I just wanted you to know that the Alexandria campus is pulling for you! Little Mattie is a fighter and the entire cohort is praying and fighting right along with him. You are in thoughts...

Mattie, Vicki and Pete -
This is Allison Portnoy, a friend of Grace Putnam's and mother of William who had bone cancer 2 years ago. I know from reading your blog and talking to Vicki, that you are all very special people. The Portnoy family has you all in our thoughts and prayers as you begin what I know seems like a road that will never end. But, having gone through it ourselves, we send you words of encouragement and hope - today, one year after William finished chemo we took him ice skating for the first time - that smile and sense of accomplishment made us all melt.
If you ever have any further questions or need moral support please know we are here to help in ANY way.
Good luck on Monday and Tuesday and we will be thinking of you.
Best
Allison, Jim, Benjamin, William and Robert Portnoy
