Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to us that you take the time to write to us and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful to us and help support us through very challenging times. To you we are forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically stop writing on September 9, 2010. However, at the moment, I feel like our journey with grief still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with us, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki and Peter

Tonight's picture was taken in July of 2009. Sitting in the background is Brandon, Mattie's buddy. Brandon was diagnosed with cancer around the same time as Mattie. Though Brandon's treatment was over by that time, he came back often to the hospital to visit Mattie. That day they worked on the creation of Dr. Crazy Hair. The doctor's hair was made out of feathers and the doctor had all sorts of things in his pocket, such as a big shell, which Mattie said represented a toe nail! Dr. Crazy Hair stood in our living room for years, before I dismantled him.

Quote of the day: Today's coronavirus update from Johns Hopkins

  • Number of people diagnosed with the virus: 33,852,037
  • Number of people who died from the virus: 607,150

It was over 90 degrees today and extremely humid. Yet I knew I had to tackle the garage, as it was a big project that I wanted done before all sorts of contractors start working at the house next week. The garage is filled with cabinets and also a workbench space for Peter to do fix-it projects. I have wanted to put things in these cabinets, until I looked at them! They were filthy! Inside and out! So I spent hours today vacuuming them (as they were filled with dirt, cobble webs, dead bugs, etc) and then washing them all down. I am quite certain that everything this former owner touched, needs cleaning! Do you remember pigpen in the Charlie Brown series? We clearly had our own pigpen who lived in the house.

By 4pm, we both needed a break and I committed to Peter that we would try the pool today! So we made that happen. I know I haven't been in a pool in a LONG TIME. At least 14 years ago. The last time was before Mattie had cancer and we were teaching him to swim.

Peter literally jumped in today and unlike him, I have to adjust to the temperature and take it step by step. Sunny hates water, and is actually quite frightened if he hears people splashing around in the pool.

I guess I forgot how lovely it feels to be in water. I thought it was very therapeutic today and the only reason I deem the pool safe to go into is I like the fellow who cleans the pool. He takes his time at each visit and he text messages us updates about the pool's status each week.

Though Sunny doesn't go into the pool, he LOVES sitting on a lounge chair with me. He is my boy!
