Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to us that you take the time to write to us and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful to us and help support us through very challenging times. To you we are forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically stop writing on September 9, 2010. However, at the moment, I feel like our journey with grief still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with us, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki and Peter

Tonight's picture was taken in June of 2008. I remember this day very well. It was Mattie's end of the year kindergarten party. The class went to a park that day. There were activities, pizza, and the opportunity to give the teachers gifts. In this photo, Mattie was sitting between his two closest friends, Charlotte and Campbell. Well according to Mattie, he was going to marry Charlotte, and according to Charlotte, Mattie and Campbell were going to be her college roommates. They were an adorable trio!

Quote of the day: Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others.Winston Churchill

We hit a lot of traffic driving to Raleigh, NC today. It took us over 5 hours. Some how we seem road weary, or at least I do. Many of the roads in NC look like this! It is beautiful, a lot of greenery and very little congestion.
This NC shaped shrub greeted us as we crossed the border into the State. I did my best to capture it, but moving at highway speed makes it challenging.
After we checked into the hotel, we decided to walk a bit around Raleigh. If you look down this road the building in the distance is the State Capital.
This is Raleigh's performing arts center. It is a beautiful complex and literally right next door is Shaw University.
I love this giant acorn that greets you in front of the Duke Center performing arts complex. It is 10-feet-tall and 8-feet-wide, and is considered a public-art piece saluting the city's nickname as the "City of Trees."
