Tonight's picture was taken in June of 2009. It was the morning of Mattie's sternotomy. As you can see Mattie was surrounded by Tricia (Mattie's favorite HEM/ONC nurse), Linda (Mattie's child life specialist), and a young college student who was a juggler. Linda brought in the juggler to entertain Mattie and to take his mind off his surgery. Some people think the doctors and surgeons are the miracle workers. Yes they are skilled, but it is the psychosocial people who are the ones who sit with you through the TOUGH stuff and make the horrific slightly more bearable. That to me is priceless!!!

Vicki,
I did not remember that Vincent Van Gogh said " what is done in love is done well." That statement is so true. I have witnessed it. Love conquers, it may not change the situation but love stays when everything else is falling apart. This I believe to be true too!
I will forever believe psychosocial support is extremely important. I have watched a child's whole day turn around because of attention & diversion from worry about what is going to happen next. I have watched children & families find empowerment with their psychosocial team to find the strength & determination to accomplish things, they once thought they couldn't.
I believe firmly that psychosocial support and the medice together make a difference for the life of a child in treatment for Cancer. The medicine alone can only go so far, if the psychological needs of the children & their families are not met!
