Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to us that you take the time to write to us and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful to us and help support us through very challenging times. To you we are forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically stop writing on September 9, 2010. However, at the moment, I feel like our journey with grief still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with us, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki and Peter

Tonight's picture was taken in December of 2008. Just like all the other months, Mattie spent most of December in the hospital. Mattie's child life specialist, Linda, helped greatly by giving us Christmas lights and other things to decorate our room. We had a reputation in the PICU, because with each hospital admission, I always decorated Mattie's room. It was NEVER boring in the room. Certainly it took more effort on my part (because I had to pack, unpack, and organize items), but I was determined to make the room look more like a home than an institution. The room at Christmas time was twinkling and as you can see Mattie decorated his wheelchair with a Santa and he decided to wear the Christmas stockings that friends gave him for his home! But check out the donut. Mattie went through a donut phase in the hospital. He couldn't get enough frosted vanilla donuts with sprinkles. It was so much of a joke, that we called it his one donut a day diet. Given that Mattie did not feel like eating anything as a result of high dose chemotherapy, I welcomed whatever he wanted to eat.

We played this "One Donut a Day" song to Mattie OFTEN in the hospital. It always made him laugh..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b36sUPqE8Gg

Quote of the day: Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog. ~ Sidney Jeanne Seward

This was the sight I saw this morning while working in Mattie's room by the computer. I turned around, and apparently Sunny had hopped up on Mattie's bed! This is an absolute first, because usually this bed is reserved for Indie! He looks comfortable, NO!?
I met with my friend Margy today. Margy visits Mattie's memorial tree on special occasions. At lunch she showed me the Christmas ornament she purchased and plans to add to the tree. The ornament has jingle bells on it and I have no doubt Mattie would have absolutely LOVED IT!!!!

Meanwhile, Sunny went for his monthly grooming today. His groomer, Mandy, is in LOVE with Sunny. She always sends him home with homemade treats (that she bakes herself --- and they are wholesome and delicious according to Sunny) and a holiday scarf appropriate for the season. Can you see his poinsettia scarf???

When I drop Sunny off for the day at the groomer's, he always looks at me like..... YOU AREN'T LEAVING ME HERE, ARE YOU??? Sunny is very much attached to me and when I picked him up later in the afternoon, he could hear me in the lobby, and was getting very excited because he knew that meant he was going home. It is hard to believe we have only had Sunny since September. Four months is not a long time, yet he is very much a part of our family.

Vicki, I love Mattie's Santa socks. They are one Christmas item, I have never seen in a store!! It is a good feeling to know that every admission of Mattie, you decorated his room. It must have made the bleak, hospital room glow with love.

I so enjoy our lunches and I am appreciative that you took me the first time to Mattie's tree. I have no trouble finding it since the ultimate navigator travels with me. The beauty of Mattie's tree impresses both of us. It too, is a testament of love from the dedication plaque to the various treasures hanging from the tree's limbs. We have seen the tree in all the Seasons and know it is beautiful year round. A testament of love.

Sunny is the dog, everyone hopes to get. I am so glad, he came to you!!!
