Tonight's picture was taken in July of 2003, during our first trip with Mattie to the Outer Banks, NC. Mattie's first beach trip was an experience mainly because he disliked the sand and the sound of the ocean. That year we spent a great deal of time on the deck looking at the water from afar. As Peter and I are in North Carolina this week, it makes me stop and pause and remember our first family trip to the ocean.
Quote of the day: Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein. ~ H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Peter and I left Washington, DC at 7:45am, which was a good thing since many roads and our main bridge out of the city were being closed at 8am due to Rolling Thunder and the Memorial Day events. It was a VERY long car trip to Emerald Isle, NC! Over six hours, which may not sound bad, but the roads were very monotonous and I told Peter I was so tired that if I had to drive these roads we would have certainly landed in a ditch! As we entered the Isle, we drove over a cause way, and here is what we saw.
From our deck, here is the amazing view we have. Though there are people all around us, it isn't congested, and our goal is to try to find a few days of peace. We are both very tired and my headaches are back in full force. Most likely as a result of intense working before and through the Foundation's Walk.
This evening we went for a walk on the beach and I got to see my favorite sea birds.... the piping plovers!
I end tonight with two photos from this year's Walk. This is a photo of my dad sitting at our Foundation Table! My dad and our friend Dave manned the Foundation table this year and talked with attendees about the Foundation, as well as processed donations. Though the day started out grey and with rain, the Foundation tables looked bold, bright, and lively. Just like Mattie!
At the Walk, we had many posters on display. These particular four detailed childhood cancer facts. I feel this data is vital to share with others because one of our main goals of Mattie Miracle is to increase community awareness and support. Though our Walks are geared for families to unite and have fun, I feel the fun must always be tempered with the reality of our cause. A cause that took Mattie's life.
