Proud of my work -- 16 Years of Service

Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to me that you take the time to write and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful and help support me through very challenging times. I am forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically have stopped writing on September 9, 2010. However, like my journey with grief there is so much that still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with me, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki

Tonight's picture was taken in April of 2008. Mattie was 6 years old and received a package for his birthday from our former neighbors, who moved to NYC. Mattie LOVED how the package was mailed, with this brown paper around it. On the paper were drawings, poems, and all the words to Happy Birthday Mattie. We decided to hang up the paper for a few days so Mattie could enjoy the celebration.

Quote of the day: Today's coronavirus update from Johns Hopkins.

  • Number of people diagnosed with the virus: 32,072,187
  • Number of people who died from the virus: 572,186

I went to check out the Foundation's Walk thermometer today and I noticed it jumped up! Yet I received no email notifications about this jump. Which concerned me. So naturally I went into our fundraising system and low and behold, found that there were close to twenty donations I did not know about. I like to personally acknowledge anyone who contributes to us, whether an event registration, donation, or the purchase of a raffle ticket. So I got myself organized and began working away.

As of today we have raised $66,668, toward our $100,000 goal. Because fundraising is so nerve racking, I decided about four years ago to track the thermometer day by day, so that I would have some understanding for how we are doing in comparison to the previous year. Having this data easily accessible truly makes my life much easier.

I have to admit it is strange to plan a virtual event. The energy that surrounds a live event is much different from a virtual one. However, I am also aware of the fact that the virtual event enables us to reach a much broader network of people. Last year, we received so many emails from people thanking us for giving them a chance to walk with the Foundation virtually. I can only hope this is sustainable and it isn't a pandemic hiccup. Time will tell. To learn more about our event, go to: https://2021.mmcfwalk.com/walk
