Thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive!

Dear Mattie Blog Readers,

It means a great deal to us that you take the time to write to us and to share your thoughts, feelings, and reflections on Mattie's battle and death. Your messages are very meaningful to us and help support us through very challenging times. To you we are forever grateful. As my readers know, I promised to write the blog for a year after Mattie's death, which would mean that I could technically stop writing on September 9, 2010. However, at the moment, I feel like our journey with grief still needs to be processed and fortunately I have a willing support network still committed to reading. Therefore, the blog continues on. If I should find the need to stop writing, I assure you I will give you advanced notice. In the mean time, thank you for reading, thank you for having the courage to share this journey with us, and most importantly thank you for keeping Mattie's memory alive.

As Mattie would say, Ooga Booga (meaning, I LOVE YOU)! Vicki and Peter

Tonight's picture was taken in May of 2006. I know exactly where we were that day, given the balloon. Our grocery store, Harris Teeter, used to give out balloons to the children who entered the store. They also had sugar cookies for the children too. Mattie was a fan of both. Mattie never turned down a balloon and somehow they used to bring him happiness and of course lots of smiles. Which was most likely why I snapped a photo of that moment in time. I am so glad I did!

Quote of the day: Today's coronavirus update from Johns Hopkins

  • Number of people diagnosed with the virus: 32,918,558
  • Number of people who died from the virus: 585,664

This morning I woke up to a text from my lifetime friend Karen. She wanted to know why I hadn't posted a blog last night. As she knows, no matter what I am doing I post a message and have since July of 2008, when Mattie was diagnosed. I haven't missed even ONE night in 13 years. Which truly is a feat. Because think of your day. Can you imagine after a long day, sitting down and writing? Some days you might not feel like doing it. But regardless of how I am feeling, I write.

When Karen said she did not see a posting, I was confused. Mainly because I knew I did write a message and I did publish it last night before going to bed! So what happened? Turns out my posting was flagged on the world wide web and therefore pulled from publication. I think the whole thing is a riot since if you look at my posting from last night, it was innocuous. We actually received an email late last night about the posting being pulled and then an apology this morning, saying it was flagged incorrectly and was therefore published. Wow is all I can say!

It was another busy day for the Virtual Walk. I can't believe our 12th Annual Walk is tomorrow. It is an odd feeling not to have a live event, but in all reality, COVID forced me to think outside the box. In doing so, we now have participation in our event from all 50 states. But I do feel the connections and energy with a virtual event are quite different. Hosting a live event was a herculean feat. It would take me months to plan and there were expenditures like city permits, liability insurance for the event, moon bounces, and t-shirts to name a few. In all reality that wasn't so bad, what was challenging was set up and clean up. My home looked like a warehouse weeks before and after the Walk, and the day of the Walk, Peter and I worked from sun up to sun down. But intense work, work which I know is not sustainable as I age.

Here is today's update on the Walk:

  • Raised $114,730
  • Raffle has raised $3,215
  • 22 sponsors
  • 18 Walk teams
  • 226 registered walkers
  • 50 States represented

We are grateful to ALL of our supporters! You have helped us exceed our financial goal of $100,000 and we look forward to seeing you virtually tomorrow. Peter and I will do a Facebook Live greeting at 9:45am on Sunday and we look forward to seeing photos of supporters walking and wearing orange. Don't forget to post photos on our social media platforms and use #MMCFWALK
